Are you planning a garage sale this weekend? Before hosting your own garage sale, here are few hacks for a more successful sale.
Turn on the tunes
Have music on in the background so it is not too quiet or awkward. Keep in mind that your garage sale shoppers are from different age brackets so be sure to play something that’s suitable for everyone.
Make prices visible
Make it visible for your buyers to see the price of your item. Sometimes, people do not buy if they do not see the price of the item. Garage sale shoppers are budget conscious and not everyone will be comfortable approaching you to ask for the price on every item. So, price everything before you go garage sale-ing!
Group “Like” items together
No one is going to buy one perfect spoon! Well not unless it’s solid silver. If you have a set of dishware or kitchen utensils, sell them together. This way, you get rid of more items and your customers get complete sets.
Section your garage into color zones
Sick of having to dig onto boxes looking for an item? Then create color zones in your garage! Boy’s items can be under the blue zone, girl’s items under the pink zone, and household items under the white zone etc., Be creative! This is to help you organize where the items are located.
Display your clothes
Do not make the mistake of folding your clothes! Always hang clothes on hangers. People can’t buy what they don’t see plus people will pay more for hanged clothes over boxed ones. This also saves time because you won’t have to refold it after people rummage through it. The only exception to the hanging rule are baby and children’s clothing; arrange kids clothing by folding them neatly on tables according to their sizes. Or package clothes up into Zip lock bags and sell outfits instead of individual items.
No matter what you do, it’s almost impossible to sell everything. You can start with high prices and as time progresses, lower them. And lower them, and lower them. But at some point, your time will become more valuable and it’s time to give them to your favourite charity. If you don’t have a favorite, pick one. If you were ready to sell it, then it’s not allowed back in the house. That’s the rule.
Create a freebie box and throw in some of your low-ticket items! Giving things away for free can draw attention to your garage sale. Plus it’ll let customers know that you are there to move product.
